Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The online conversation in question contained details about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be released in the coming days.
