European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
