Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
